RARE Cambridge University 9ct Gold Football Medal 1900. The medal is engraved: "Inter Collegiate Football Association Challenge Cup, won by Trinity Rest, A H Tompson, 1900." In 1855 the University had a formal football club, the Cambridge University Association Football Club, making it one of the oldest clubs in the world. Collegiate football helped spread the game in the 1870s, and the first competition for these teams was held in 1882-1883. The format was a knockout tournament. The first entrants included nine colleges (Caius, St. John's, Clare, St. Catharine's, Pembroke, Sidney, Jesus, King's and Trinity Hall) and three old boys sides (Old Harrovians, Trinity Etonians and Trinity Rest).
The medal is hallmarked with "9" and ".375" for 9 carat gold alongside the maker's mark "M&B" for Marples & Beasley (Jewellers & medallists, Albion Street, Birmingham), the "anchor" Birmingham town mark and date letter "Z" for 1899/1900.

It measures 25mm x 23mm. The weight is 5.0g.
