Ackermann's Series of National Steeple Chases, "The Dublin 1856, Charging the Stone Wall" an original hand coloured aqatint published by "Ackermann's 96 Strand London June 15th 1856". Designed and engraved by Charles Hunt. In small print below the scene, each jockey is identified by name, colour of jacket and the horse he is riding. Below the title is printed "Valentine leading, Lottery and the Nun falling, Seventy-four clearing in gallant style, but on alighting came in contact with the Nun just rising from the fall, and was himself thrown down with great violence. The Marquis of Waterford on Tea, Arthur and Jerry, bringing up the rear." Original Hogarth frame with gilded running pattern and black laquer and glazed. Aqatint measures 57cm by 47cm and frame 69 by 59cm. Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) was a German-born inventor, bookseller, lithographer and publisher. He was born in Stollberg (Saxony, Germany) as the son of a saddler.
